Awkward Conversation - United Church of Canada/RacismThe Alberta and Northwest Conference (ANWC) of The United Church of Canada will be having a two-day symposium to discuss the contemporary issues of race and discrimination as it affects black people and, in light of the Mission of the Church, to consider ways that the church might respond to these issues.
The symposium is entitled, “An Awkward Conversation in the Church”. The event will be hosted by the Conference Intercultural Ministry Committee and will be held at the Providence Renewal Centre, Edmonton, from October 4 -6, 2017.

In recent years the challenges of race, race relations and racial discrimination have come to the fore with the shooting of Black people in the USA and acts of racial discrimination in Canada. The ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement found its genesis in those events as a reaction and response of the African American community in the USA to confront and correct the injustice implicit in those actions. The Black Lives Matter movement has also sparked a renewed consciousness throughout North America about the continuing discrimination faced by Black people in society. The reality is that racism in various forms is still alive and well in Canada and in the United States of America.

The United Church of Canada has officially affirmed the journey towards being an intercultural church. This movement includes the need for the church to be an interracial community where all persons of different races are invited, welcomed and can fully participate. In the face of the discrimination and racism the church will not be silent.

Organizers have made every effort to provide this Conference without a registration fee. We thank the donors for their generosity.  The only costs for attendees are accommodation and meals.

“An Awkward Conversation in the Church” is an invitation for the ANWC to engage in a conversation about the often times uncomfortable issue of racial discrimination in the society and to discuss the role and witness of the church in these issues in the current context. The conversation will be open to all persons within The United Church of Canada, who will be accommodated depending on the availability of space. Each Presbytery in ANW Conference will be asked to send two representatives to the conversation.
